Wesley Hamilton: Point Guard, 2020 Prospect
I don’t think I can remember a time when I didn’t play basketball. When I was about two years old, my brother Mack would let me throw balls at his Fisher Price basketball net and cheer for me every time it went in the hoop. It would drive my parents crazy because the hoop was in our bedroom and you could hear the thumping all through the house.
That spring, my mom found a second hoop that someone was throwing away and brought it home. She set it up on the back deck along with the other net and Mack and I would play out there for hours.
When I was nine years old, I got the opportunity to try out for the IEM Spartan Novice basketball team in Newmarket, Ontario. That year, our team went from the bottom of the pack to being ranked #1 by the Ontario Basketball Association.
I’ve been very fortunate to play with some great players and made some excellent friendships. My coaches have not only loved the game of basketball, but they have encouraged me to keep on working on my game. Special thanks to Coach Frank Duarte and Assistant Coach Godfrey Simpson.
Each summer, I would attend a basketball camp and spend hours each day shooting hoops in my driveway. Family friends ~Phil and Rhonda Brooks~ gave Mack and I a great basketball net. The net rarely got a rest … even in the winter months.
I love being able to play basketball. But I don’t just want to play the game, I want to be the best player I can be. I work on the fundamentals of the game almost every day. I work on my dribbling for hours at a time. I train myself to shoot free throws not only with my right hand but also with my left. Without exaggeration, I take hundreds (if not thousands) of shots and layups each week measure the statistics to mark improvement.
During the Winter and Spring of 2015, I was encouraged by Keswick High School Coach, Francis Lundrigan who provided me with opportunity to practice and scrimmage with the Senior High School Men’s Team. Considering I was only in Grade 8, this was an amazing opportunity. During the Summer, Coach Lundrigan personally trained me and provided me with amazing court time. In addition, he provided opportunity for me to give leadership to a two-week basketball camp. I could not thank him enough for these opportunities.
During the summer of 2015, I was asked to play up 2 years for Coach Howard Pryce of the Newmarket Avengers 16U AAU Summer Team. Although I had only just turned 14, his encouragement and training helped me to reach beyond what I thought I could do. I played an average of 35 minutes per game scoring more than 15 points each game.
At the end of the summer, I was asked to try out another AAU team, CKU Basketball. This was a year of training and skill development. In addition, I also played for Keswick High School as the starting point guard averaging more than 20 points per game for the 2015-2016 season.
Further, I tried out for the Gators Elite Basketball in Markham, Ontario. I was the starting point guard for our team averaging more that 14 points per game. We had the opportunity to play in two tournaments in the USA; Chicago and New Jersey.
Most recently, I am again the Captain and Starting Point Guard for Keswick High School. After 11 games, my averages have been strong: 21PPG, 7AST, 6RB, 7ST with 5+ three pointers per game. I have also been selected to play for Gators Elite Basketball for the 2016-2017 season and am getting requests to play for several other clubs. Most recently, I’ve been asked to join a team in the United States for the Spring and Summer of 2017. I’ve made no commitment at this time … school first.
